The woodcock or scolopax rusticola is a nocturnal bird that spends most of the day hidden in dense cover. Its mottled plumage provides the perfect camouflage. It is most active at dawn and dusk when it forages for worms and grubs. With its 360 degree vision, it keeps an eye out for predators while it is feeding.
They arrive in the UK in autumn to winter here, after migrating from Russia and Finland. Sadly, it is on the UK Conservation red list as the breeding population has declined.
Hamish has made a series of woodcock sculptures in celebration of this woodland game bird. Woodcock Eating Worm 2019 makes a delightful trio with Woodcock Foraging 2019 and Woodcock Walking 2019.
