A Skating Scene on the Outskirts of Vienna
VICTOR ADAM MALINOWSKI
1829-1892
Polish School
Oil on canvas
Signed, inscribed and dated 1873
Little is known about the life of Malinowski and it is thought that most of his works remain in Russia and the former eastern bloc. He was born in Lublin, which is east of the Vistula River and is about 170 kms southeast of Warsaw, but died in Warsaw in 1892.
He was predominantly a landscape artist and his paintings typify the nineteenth century romantic school and the winter scenes are reminiscent of the 19th century Dutch masters Jan Jacob Spohler, Charles Henri Joseph Leickert and Barend Cornelis Koekkoek who were known especially for their winter landscapes.
The Helsinki Museum houses six of his paintings, the titles of which include:
'View of the Coast, Heligoland', 'Landscape by Moonlight', 'Winter Landscape' and 'Ducks in a Landscape'.
