The Sugar Caster is of a plain baluster octagonal form and stands on a stepped base, decorated with reeding. The pull off cover has a girdle around the centre and is pierced and engraved with attractive geometric scroll panels. The cover terminates in a stylised octagonal urn finial. The caster is very well marked in the foot and on the sleeve of the cover with the maker's mark and leopard's head. The base is also engraved with a set of contemporary marriage initials. Charles Adam was apprentice to Francis Archbold and was free 11th March, 1689. He had workshops in Foster Lane when this caster was made. Adam was a specialist caster maker and his apprentice, Thomas Bamford, was also to become a prolific caster maker.
