The Sweetmeat Basket stands on a cast openwork base, chased with Rococo shells, scrolls and flower heads. The main body has an unusual shaped circular form and also displays a cast rim decorated with scrolls, shells and foliate motifs. The main body is decorated with bands of swirling beads and panels of unusual stylised flower head designs. The cast arched handle is pierced with scroll motifs and displays floral details. The basket is in excellent crisp condition. Edward Aldridge was a specialist pierced worker, producing some of the finest baskets of this period.
Height to the rim: 1.9 inches, 4.75 cm.
Height to the top of the handle: 5 inches, 12.5 cm.
