This very fine box has an attractive navette form and unusually has a tortoiseshell base and sides, with reeded silver mounts, however the hinged cover is made of mother of pearl. This is the first time we have seen this combination on such a box. The cover is beautifully engraved with Classical designs included bead bands, trellis work, floral and foliate sprays, as well as a central shield shaped cartouche engraved with the contemporary script initials WB. This piece is in excellent condition and the decoration is very crisp.
