The "Urn" form Nutmeg Grater is one of the rarest designs from the George II period and this example stands on a circular spreading pedestal foot. The baluster shaped body is beautifully chased in the Rococo manner with scrolls, flower heads and shell details all on a matted ground. The screw off cover is chased with the same designs as seen on the main body and terminates in a stylised urn finial. Once the cover is removed, this reveals a removable steel grater with silver rim. This piece is in excellent condition and is marked in the cover with a clear maker's mark of DF for Daniel Field. Similar designs, one by Daniel Field, are shown in the catalogue of the famous Robert & Meredith Green Collection of Nutmeg Graters and are referred to as Rococo urn graters.
Height: 1.75 inches, 4.38 cm.
