A George IV Silver Gilt "Lyre" Vinaigrette made in Birmingham in 1826 by Ledsam & Vale.

This rare "Lyre" Vinaigrette has a deep broad rectangular form. The base and sides are decorated with engine turning around a cast floral and foliate border. The base also displays a central rectangular cartouche engraved with a set of contemporary initials. The cover displays an unusual Lyre shaped motif surrounded by floral sprays, all on a matted ground. The Lyre is one of the oldest stringed instruments, characterised by U shaped frame with strings attached to a cross bar. Dating back to the Bronze Age, circa 2700 BC, it remains a deeply culturally significant instrument.
The cover opens up to reveal a finely gilded interior and a very unusual grille displaying a floral wheel motif, flanked by feathery scrolls. This is also a particularly rare design and is of the finest quality. It is in excellent condition, a very good weight, and is very well marked.
