It is throught that these two handled trays were used to serve bacon, asparagus or canapes from, however examples made by any silversmth are scarce from this period.  This example has a broad rectangular form with raised rim decorated with gadrooning and a raying shell in each corner.  The arched handles have incuse sides and are also decorated with a shell at the top.  The centre is engraved with a contemporary squirrel Crest sitting on a Rococo shell detail, all surrounded by a floral and foliate spray cartouche.  This piece is in very good condition and is well marked on the reverse.

John Payne was the son of the prolific silversmith Humphrey Payne and he was apprenticed to his father from 11th January, 1733.  His first mark was entered in 1751 from workshops in Cheapside, London.  He was Warden of the Goldsmith's Company, 1760-62, and held the prestigious position of Prime Warden in 1765.
