This very fine nutmeg grater is modelled in the Rococo egg form with a cover which unscrews and the interior silver rimmed steel grater can also be removed. The exterior is beautifully chased with crisp Rococo designs including swirling scrolls, foliate plumes, raying flower heads and shell details, all perfectly executed in the Rococo manner. The Nutmeg Grater is in excellent condition and is marked in the top section of the cover with SM, for Samuel Merition. This design are only ever marked with just the maker's mark. A near identical design is shown on page 23 of the catalogue of the Robert and Meredith Green Collection of silver Nutmeg Graters. A similar example, by the same maker, is also shown in "Nutmeg Graters, Pommanders and Spice Boxes" page 97, Figures 12-13.

Diameter at the widest point: 1.15 inches.
MARKS - Clearly stamped in the cover with a clear SM maker's mark. This design is usually only ever marked just with the maker's mark.
