A very rare Naturalistic "Strawberry" Nutmeg Grater made in Birmingham in 1859 by Hilliard & Thomason.

£6,950

Hilliard & Thomason made a series of naturalistic nutmeg graters such as walnuts, melons and clam shells, and the strawberry is recognised as the rarest and most desirable.  The one we offer is finely modelled to simulate the form and surface of the strawberry, with stippled body on a matted ground.  The finely engraved top section is modelled to simulate the end of the green stem.  The box opens up to reveal the hinged, steel, silver rimmed grater.  This piece is in quite excellent condition and is fully marked on the bezel and with the Queen’s Head Duty mark on the silver rim of the grater.  We offer this at a very good price and they seldom appear on the market one of the last was at Lyon & Turnbull in Edinburgh in 2007, making £ 7,440.  The auction result page is attached.
