The Tapersticks are cast and stand on raised square bases, with sunken wells, decorated with gadrooning.  The tapering faceted baluster stems are decorated with gadrooning and linear bands.  The circular detachable nozzles are also decorated with gadrooning.  The Tapersticks are matched, both being made by Ebenezer Coker one in 1769 and one in the following year, 1770.  They are in quite excellent condition, with fine colour, and are very well marked in the base.  Ebenezer Coker was a specialaist Candlestick maker, who was working in Clerkenwell Close when these Candlesticks were made.  He has a very long working life being apprentice to Joseph Smith in 1728 and entering his first mark on 27th March, 1738.  He died on 2nd August, 1783.

This is a most unusual style to find in the smaller taperstick form.  A near identical pair by William Cafe and dated 1761, are contained within the collection of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.

Height: 6.2 inches., 15.5 cm.

Base Diameter: 4 inches, 10 cm.
