This outstanding piece has a deep cushion shaped base, with incuse corners and an egg and dart border. The cover is modelled in the same design and terminates in a quite magnificent cast finial decorated with cascading acanthus foliage, Rococo shells, scrolls and fruiting vines. The finial can be removed so that the cover can be used as a second serving dish. The front and rear of the cover are engraved with a contemporary Armorial, and Motto, surrounded by a plume cartouche. The base is engraved, on both sides, with a contemporary Crest. The Arms, Crest and Motto are those of Parkyns for Sir Boultbee Parkyns, 4th Baronet of Bunny Hall, Nottinghamshire. In 1819 he married Charlotte Mary Smith and this may well have been a wedding present to celebrate the occasion. This piece is in excellent condition and is very well marked on each of the pieces. Benjamin Smith was in the circle of Paul Storr and the quality of his output is comparable with Storr. He was patronised by the Royal family and his most important production must surely be the Jamaica Service, of 1803, in the Royal Collection.
