A very fine George III Water/Wine Ewer made in London in 1778 by Makepeace & Carter

The Ewer is of the Neo Classical form and stands on a domed circular foot. The main body is vase shaped and is decorated with various beaded bands, as is the rim. The high domed cover terminates in a beaded cast urn finial. The scroll handle is covered with its original wicker and displays ribbed and acanthus leaf mouldings. The main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial with Crest above, all surrounded by a detailed cartouche of drapery mantling. The Arms and Crest are those of the Wood family of Lewtrenchard and Orchard Barton, both County Devon. The arms of three leopards' faces against an army of cross crosslets is unique to this family. The Crest of a Woodman with his club is a play on words for the surname of Wood. The Arms impale those of the Martyn family.
The Ewer is fully marked in the foot and with the maker's mark and sterling mark on the inside of the cover. This piece is in excellent condition and is of the finest quality in terms of both design and production.
