The label is cast and modelled as an ostrich on a chapeau with a horseshoe in its mouth. The modelling is exceptional and the surface textured to simulate the feathers of the bird. This example is pierced for MADEIRA and is modelled as the Crest of the Coke family, Earls of Leicester of Holkham Hall, Norfolk. It is that as used by Thomas William Coke (1754-1842) who, in 1837, was created 1st Earl of Leicester of the 7th creation. Identical examples for SHERRY and PORT are shown in "Wine Labels - A Worldwide History" on pages 94 and 98. This piece is in excellent crisp condition.
