Eighteenth century caddy spoons from Exeter are very rare, this being one of only two we have seen over all of the years. This example has a Provincial feel to the design with stylised scallop shell bowl and long tapering handle decorated with bright cut bands, a raying flower head and vacant bright cut oval cartouche. The spoon is in excellent condition and is well marked on the reverse. We date it to circa 1786-90, as it bears the King's head in an oval punch, but does not have a date letter, which it should have from 1791. This spoon was in the Collection of Capatin John Norie and is illustrated in "Caddy Spoons" by Captain John Norie, Plate 65, Figure e.
Length: 3.85 inches, 9.63 cm.
Width of the bowl: 1.55 inches, 3.88 cm.
