The Nutmeg grater has a cylindrical body with a reeded base and rim. This example has a hinged bottom opening to store the nutmeg and a slightly domed hinged cover which, when opened, reveals the steel grater. Very few Nutmeg Graters were assayed in Chester and, most interestingly, this piece is mentioned on page 200 of "Chester Silver 1727-1837" by Canon Maurice H. Ridgeway, as being offered at Sotheby's on 18th April, 1968, Lot 135, but whereabouts unknown.
Height: 1.5 inches.
