The Tankard is of a good substantial size and stands on a stepped circular foot. The baluster main body has an applied reeded girdle around the lower section and the stepped domed cover is also decorated with reeded bands. This example has an attractive scroll handle, with heart shaped end, which is attached to the cover with a cast chair back thumb piece. The front of the main body is beautifully engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a cartouche of shell details, scrolls and floral and foliate sprays. The Arms are those of Pudsey, a very widespread family with branches in Yorkshire, who also spread to the counties of Lancs, Beds, Staffs and Oxon. The Tankard is in excellent condition, is of a good colour and is fully marked on the base and in the cover. The handle is also stamped with a maker's mark. John Payne was the son of the prolific silversmith, Humphrey Payne, a specialist maker of mugs and tankards.
