£4,250

The Box is of a large size and is plain in design with a pull off cover.  The cover is finely engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with Crest above, and the inscription: " The Gift of John Spooner Esqr to his friend Josh Pooley".  The Box is very well inside on both the base and the cover.  This piece is in excellent condition, has a wonderful colour and is of an exceptional weight.  Thomas Phipps & Edward Robinson produces some of the most outstanding boxes in London during this period. Their quality of design and production is exceptional, which is clearly seen with this Tobacco Box.

With regard to the Armorial, the male Arms are those of Pooley, granted to Sir John Pooley Knighted in Dublin in 1599.  The female Arms are those of Garway.  Joseph Pooley (1759-1828) married Mary Garway (1754-1825) on 20th October, 1782.  In 1781 Joseph Pooley became a freeman of Ipswich after being apprenticed to James Coe, a banker.  He became a baliff of Ipswich in 1827 and died in 1828.  In his Will, John Spooner lists him as an executor.  His marble funeral monument is attached which is in St. Margaret's Church in Ipswich.
