This exceptionally fine Tray, has a large deep rectangular form, with slightly flared sides, the rim being decorated with gadrooning interspersed with anthemion motifs, as well as double Rococo raying shells, flanked by acanthus foliage. This was a known Paul Storr design, as well as being used by Philip Rundell.  Both sides of the Tray are very finely engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with Crest above and motto "Festina Lente - Be Quick without impetuosity" engraved on a banner below. The Armorial is flanked, either side, by falcon supporters. The Tray, and engraving, are in exceptional, crisp, condition and display a set of hallmarks on the side of the main body. This piece is made of a very good gauge of silver and has a fine patina. Knife Trays from the workshops of Paul Storr are rare, as he made few during his career, however their design lends them for a variety of uses, such as for bread, fruit and flowers on the table.

The Arms, Crest and Motto are those as used by George Onslow, 1st Earl of Onslow (1731-1814) who sat as M.P. for Rye from 1754-1761 and for Surrey from 1761 to 1774. From 1765 to 1777, he was junior Lord of the Treasury. He then became successively Comptroller of the Household and Treasurer of the Household.   His seat was Clandon Park, the magnificent Palladian Mansion in West Clandon, County Surrey.  The Onslow service was made by Paul Storr in 1812 and all pieces are dated for this year and engraved with these Heraldic bearings.  Images of the 1st Earl and Clandon Park are shown.
