As you will see from the images, this example is modelled in a very unusual deep, and slender, broad rectangular form. The cover has a curved form and, most unusually, so does the base. As you will appreciate, boxes nearly always have flat bases and it is the first time we have seen this design. The sides, cover and base are engraved with crisp engine turned designs around plain band frames and the front of the cover displays a plain protruding thumb piece. The interior displays exceptional interior gilding and the base of the interior displays a full set of marks and the inside of the cover the maker's mark, sterling mark and date letter.
This piece is in quite excellent condition and the finest quality, as would be expected from this exceptional box maker. As we have emphasised, this is an unusual box design which we have not only never seen by A.J. Strachan, but also by any other silversmith.
Length: 3.25 inches, 8.13 cm.
Width: 1.1 inches, 2.75 cm.
