This extremely rare standing Snuff Box is modelled in a very unusual Rococo form. The hinged cover is inset with a shield shaped agate, of beautiful colour, surrounded by a rim chased with shells and scroll details. The box stands firmly on a chased gold ring platform and the agate sides are overlaid with gold cagework chased with shell details and scrolls. The gold sides are pierced with teardrop panels and the protruding thumb piece is also decorated with a shell motif. The box may also have been used for confits, (sweet confections), as well as snuff. The box is in most excellent condition and the side agate panels are beautifully shaded, which is shown in the photographs.
Height: 1.25 inches, 3.13cm.
