This was made in Birmingham in 1847 by Frederick Marsden and is modelled in a beautiful shaped oval form. The incuse sides are decorated with linear bands and the base is finely engraved with different diagonal bands of engine turning around a central scroll cartouche. The interior displays exceptional gilding and a grille pierced and engraved with feathery pluming scrolls and flower heads. The interior is also very well marked and the whole piece is in excellent condition.
The cover, most interestingly, is engraved with a scene which we had not previously seen and depicts an English rural Coastal scene with houses and a church in addition to a detailed bridge in the foreground. The unusual feature is that a figure is shown pulling a cow over the bridge, followed by a man with stick and heavy sack on his back. Sailing boats can be seen on the water, with mountains behind. The engraving has been executed to the finest standard.
Length: 1.65 inches, 4.13 cm
Width: 1.3 inches, 3.25 cm.
Depth: 0.4 inches, 1cm.
