The Nutmeg Grater is realistically modelled as a barrel with horizontal reeded bands to simulate the hoops on the barrel. This piece is modelled in a scarce large size and is unusually engraved on the cover with a contemporary Crest and on the base with an Armorial. The centre unscrews to reveal the removable silver rimmed steel grater. This piece is of the finest quality and is marked with the maker's mark on the inside of the cover and the base. Samuel Meriton was a very fine silversmith who specialised in the production of nutmeg graters. Barrel Nutmeg Graters do not appear often, especially of this size and engraved with a full coat of arms. The Armorial and Crest are those of the Gooddaye family of Penlowe, Higham Ferrers and Kettlebaston.
