This very rare Coaster is of the magnum size, with very deep sides and an everted rim decorated with raised shells, scrolls and foliate motifs. The sides are die stamped and chased with three very unusual scenes, these being Cupid with a globe, St Augustine in his Study, which was a popular subject in Italian Renaissance painting, and finally King Solomon receiving Kings and foreign dignitaries. The chasing has been executed to the highest standard and is in excellent, crisp, condition. The detail is extraordinary, especially the clothing. The Coaster has a silver base, which was always a sign of the finest quality and is engraved with a contemporary Crest. This piece is in quite excellent condition and is fully marked on the side of the main body, in the decoration, and on the silver base.
Silver based magnum wine coasters from London are rare, however to find any wine coaster being made in Chester during the Georgian period is most unusual.
Height: 3.2 inches, 8 cm.
Diameter at the rim: 6.5 inches, 16.25 cm.
