The box is finely modelled as a travelling trunk and is engraved all over with prick dot diamond pattern within a Greek Key outer frame.  Each end is decorated with trellis work and the cover displays a raised thumb piece and vacant cartouche.  The cover opens to reveal the very unusual grille which is inset into the interior, a design we had not seen before.  The hinged grille is beautifully pierced with raying flower heads in squares, all surrounded by a wriggle work and bead frame.  The Vinaigrette is in excellent condition and is very well marked on the underside of the cover and in the base.  The interior also displays deep gilding.  Phipps and Robinson were some of the finest box makers at this date and this is a very fine and unusual example from their workshops.
