This extremely rare Wine label is cast and silver gilt and displays the Crest of a Lion on a Chapeau, surmounted on a band of scrolls.  The banner is pierced for MADEIRA, with raised laurel swags and flower heads below.  This piece displays the Crest as used by the Earls of Shrewsbury and an identical label for SHERRY is illustrated in "Wine Labels - A Worldwide History" page 98.  Cast labels were the very finest available for the very top end of the market.  The Earl at this date was the 15th Earl and his main seat was Alton Towers.
